CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Laurie Schwoy, a three-time first-team All-America selection in the midfield and member of the United States National Team pool, will redshirt during the 1999 University of North Carolina women's soccer season. The decision was announced Wednesday, August 25, by UNC Head Women's Soccer Coach Anson Dorrance.
Schwoy, who has helped lead North Carolina to three successive Atlantic Coast Conference championships and two of the last three NCAA titles, is suffering from a high hamstring problem. After a brilliant freshman season in 1996 when she was named the consensus National Freshman of the Year, Schwoy suffered from nagging injury problems of several different natures during both the 1997 and 1998 seasons. She trained last spring in the residency camp with the U.S. National Team in Orlando as well. Soccer Buzz had tabbed Schwoy as a Prseason 1999 All-America before the announcement was made. |
However, Schwoy has been hampered this summer by the lingering hamstring injury. "We talked to our medical people and they said that the only way she would heal is to take four months off from training and basically not do anything. Rather than have her play at half speed we all talked and decided it was in her best interest to take the year off and retain her remaining season of eligibility for 2000. I feel terrible for Laurie but at the same time we hope it will work out that she can play her senior season totally injury free in 2000 and show the world what a dynamic player she is when she's healthy."
Dorrance announced that senior Lorrie Fair, a two-time first-team All-America and member of the 1999 U.S. Women's World Cup team, will move into Schwoy's old position of attacking center midfielder when the Tar Heels open the season September 1 against Tennessee at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Fair has played as a defender her first three years at UNC. |
